Texas storms are legendary for their intensity, but the damage they leave behind isn’t always as obvious as a fallen tree or a broken window. For your roof, hail damage is often a “stealth” issue—one that doesn’t leak today but could lead to a disaster six months from now.
If a storm just rolled through your neighborhood, don’t wait for a drip from the ceiling to take action. Here are the five best ways to know if your roof sustained hail damage.
1. The “Gutter Gravel” Test
After the rain stops, take a look at your downspouts. Do you see piles of small, sand-like granules? Asphalt shingles are coated with these granules to protect them from the brutal Texas sun. Hail impacts knock these loose, sending them straight into your gutters. If your gutters look like they’re filled with black sand, your shingles have lost their “sunscreen” and are now vulnerable to cracking.
2. Dents on the “Soft Metals”
You don’t always have to climb a ladder to see damage. Check the metal components of your home that are easier to see from the ground or a window:
-
Gutters and downspouts: Look for small dings or “pockmarks.”
-
Roof vents: Those metal domes or pipes on your roof show dents very easily.
-
Chimney flashing: If the metal around your chimney is dented, it’s a near-certainty your shingles took a hit too.
3. Roof “Bruising”
On an asphalt roof, hail damage often looks like a dark spot or a “bruise.” This happens when the hail stone crushes the granules into the shingle mat. If you feel these spots (safely!), they will often feel soft or spongy, similar to a bruise on an apple. These soft spots are where the waterproof seal has been compromised.
4. Cracked or Splattered Shingles
High-velocity hail can cause shingles to crack in a circular pattern, often called a “spiderweb” crack. On wooden shakes, you might see sharp-edged splits. If you have a metal roof, look for “splatter marks” where the hail removed the oxidation or dust from the panel, leaving a shiny spot that indicates a high-force impact.
5. Damage Beyond the Roof
Sometimes the best clues are at eye level. Take a walk around your property and check:
-
Window screens: Look for small holes or tears.
-
Fencing: Check for “splat” marks where the hail knocked the stain or paint off the wood.
-
AC Units: Look for flattened or dented fins on your exterior air conditioning unit.
If your fence and AC unit look beat up, your roof almost certainly is, too.
